The little things can change any room*

I bought my first home with hubby just over a year ago. As it was a new build, we were advised not to decorate for a year, so we made the decision to keep everything plain and save up so we can do everything together.

We've just had some lovely decking put into our garden and we've finished our front room, so now we are moving onto the other rooms in the house and I'm so excited to have it finished.

One thing I have noticed as we have been planning, buying things and really getting stuck into redecorating is that it's really the little things that can make a huge difference. We've spent a lot of time choosing paint colours and the larger furniture, but when we were putting together the front room, we realised it was actually the little things that made all the difference.

Here are a few of the things I've noticed can make a massive impact to the final look and feel of a home when redecorating.

I never thought I'd spend so much time looking at curtains, but here I am! I really love natural light and your choice of curtains or blinds can make a huge difference to how the light reflects around the room.

Smaller windows should definitely avoid big, bulky material. The colour and pattern you choose can have a real impact on what the final room looks like. If you've got quite a small or busy room, then an equally busy pattern is going to add clutter to the look, whereas if you've got a large room with a big window space then patterns can really add something a little special to the room!

I've been really enjoying browsing the Julian Charles website for curtains this week!

Soft furnishings

Soft furnishing like extra cushions, throws and rugs etc can add a little more of a homely feel to any room. If you've gone for a relatively plain decor, then you can add some patterns and texture with soft furnishings to add some depth to a room.

It's also one of the easiest way to change up the feel of a room if you fancy a change in the future. Our guest room is going to be relatively plain and simple and I'll be using extra cushions and a throw on the bed to give it some personality, but if I change my mind in the future it will be really simple to just switch out those bits and bobs and immediately change how the room looks!

Wall decor

Displays of photographs and wall hangings are a fabulous way to add a personal touch to a room.

We've got some of our gorgeous wedding photos being printed up onto lovely canvases ready to hang on the walls, plus some other lovely artwork that will compliment the themes in each room. I'm also after one of those faux stags heads that seem to be right on trend at the moment - it's going to go in my swanky new office!

Even moving the television from the tv stand to the wall made a huge difference in our lounge, giving a much tidier and less cluttered feel around the focus point of the room.

I'm really excited to share my home transformation with you, once we're all done I'm thinking of making a little video about it all. If you've got any tips for redecorating then make sure you tweet me as I'm always looking for inspiration! 1. I completely agree about the curtains, I really made an error in purchasing purple blackout curtains for our bedroom. I hate them, the room is so dark that I cant sleep because its too dark, I sleep in mornings because I dont realise it is morning. My partner and I disagree when I partially open them etc etc, a complete mistake.

  2. Some great tips. I really need to find some better curtains for my living room, they really don't add much to the look of it.

  3. I think I'd like to spruce up the room with some fresh new cushions.

  4. Some handy tips there, thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much for popping by and taking some time to read my posts! I would love it if you would leave a little comment and let me know what you think!
