#MondayMotivation - Changing your life with a positive mindset

Changing your life with a positive mindset

Last week, I spoke about feeling like a failure, which focused a lot on trying to cultivate those negative thoughts and find a way to overcome them. But sometimes, that is easier said than done. These thoughts will not only continue if you don't do something about it, but they can really affect your outlook on all situations and your mood.

It might all seem a bit airy fairy to say 'You just need to be positive!' but the sentiment is totally true. It's not easy, and you don't have to be perkier than Elle Woods, but it's definitely a starting point. Here are some ways you can change your mindset, and get a grip on life when it's feeling out of your control.

1. Challenge your thoughts

I spoke about this in my earlier post to an extent, but when you have negative thoughts you need to stop and challenge them.

Is the situation a complete disaster, or realistically is there something that can be done about it? Are all those people really against you, or are you trying to find something to criticise?

Your negative thoughts are part of a fixed mindset. In order to challenge them, you need to introduce a growth mindset. Here's an example:

Fixed mindset: If I don't get this right, I will be a failure
Growth mindset: Plenty of successful people have failed but have gone on to learn and grow to be able to achieve

When you start to challenge the negativity, your outlook on situations can begin to evolve and shows you a different path.

2. Change up your timeline

On a daily basis, we are exposed to negative stories in the media. Whether they directly affect us or not, if we are already in a negative mindset, it's easy to sub-consciously add these into the mix.

Negative media doesn't necessarily only relate to sad or scary news stories, but can also relate to other things we see in our social media timelines on a day to day basis. If you're Facebook feed is filled with people who are using it as an outlet for their negative thoughts, you will take this feeling on board every time you consume them.

I'm not saying you need to unfriend your pals, or block anyone, but try adding something positive into the mix. Instagram, Twitter and Facebook are filled with inspirational and positive people to interact with and just throwing a few of these into your daily mix can help your personal growth and give you something happy or positive to flourish in amongst your demons.

It doesn't have to be just in your social media feeds. You could start your day by listening to a personal growth podcast or audio book on your way to work. As cheesy as it sounds, they can sometimes spark something.

3. Try some healthy living

Negative thoughts and mindset can affect all aspects of our day to day life. From making us feel tired or fatigued, to altering our diet and our motivation.

Putting in the effort to make some really little changes into your lifestyle can be a great start to changing your mood for the whole day.

I am never a big breakfast fan (I know, save the lecture!). In fact, I rarely eat it because I just don't feel like eating when I've just rolled out of bed. When I was doing some physiotherapy for a back problem not long ago, they recommended I start eating breakfast. 'How is that going to help me?' I thought, but I gave it a go anyway, even if it was just some fruit and yoghurt. Soon enough, I was eating my words (and my breakfast!) because actually, adding this simple element gave me more energy and motivation to carry on with my day.

No longer was I starting my day feeling crappy or not having any energy to start any work or do anything, I was ready to get off to a flying start, which immediately eliminated me punishing myself for low productivity in the mornings.

Simple yoga and meditation may seem cliche, but if you fully immerse yourself into the activity, it can really give you a break from reality, even if it's just for a few minutes. Allowing myself that little bit of time every day to clear my mind of those negative thoughts made some huge differences. I now try to do a little bit of yoga in the morning before my breakfast which helps me clear my mind and boost my energy before a busy day and I do some meditation before bed, which helps wash those negative thoughts away so I can lie down for a restful sleep instead of tossing and turning all night letting my thoughts consume me.

I'm not a doctor, or an expert. But I am someone who faces these struggles on a daily basis and these are just some of the things that have helped me and I hope can help you on your growth journey.
