What to do when you fall out of love with your blog

What to do when you fall out of love with your blog

It doesn't matter whether you've been blogging for 5 weeks, 5 months or 5 years, at some point along the line, you'll fall out of love with you blog. But what do you do when this happens? Do you give up? Keep going even though you're not enjoying it and turn it into a chore? Neither of those options will do your blog any good.

I fall out of love with my blog ALL THE TIME and it could be for any number of reasons. Sometimes I don't have the time to blog as much as I'd like and so I don't like how slowly it progresses, sometimes I am annoyed that my photo's don't turn out how I wanted, or I get frustrated that only 5 people read a post that I was really proud of. But it's so important to get back to a place where you enjoy blogging and you're pleased with what you're doing.

So here's what I do when I fall out of love with my blog.

1. Take a step back

Switch off from blogging for a while. Don't write a post just because you feel like you have to unless you're feeling particularly inspired and excited about something. Take a moment away from using social media as a promotional tool as well. Yes, you're stats might drop, but in the long run, having a breather will only be a good thing.

2. Get inspired

Instead of spending your evenings agonising over getting people to your blog, go back to reading your favourite blogs, or even track down a whole load of new ones to enjoy. Most people start a blog because they have enjoyed reading other blogs and a lot of bloggers forget to read other blogs because they're too busy with their own. Settle down with a nice cup of tea and get inpired and immersed and all the other wonderfully creative blogs on the internet.

3. Freshen things up

Have you had the same blog layout for a while? Perhaps it's time for a change! Play around with colours, design yourself a new logo, try something you wouldn't usually do. Your blog doesn't have to look like every other blog, there is no specific format and if you're bored with what you have and want to clash colours and have unicorns dancing across the page then have fun with experimenting or browsing templates designed by other people

4. Decide what you want to write about

Maybe you've fallen out of love with your blog because you're just not as passionate about the subject anymore. Think about what you'd really like to blog about. It might end up being a slight twist on your current theme, or you could want to go in a different direction. Take some time to plan out how you will reintroduce your new topics. Will you do a gradual shift? Or maybe you'll do a big rebrand with an exciting launch.

5. Remember why you love blogging

Why did you enjoy blogging to start with? Did you enjoy the writing without constantly tracking stats? Composing and taking beautiful photos, chatting with the rest of the blogging community? Just go back to that for a while. Write amazing posts without obsessing over how many people read it, spend a weekend taking pretty photos or just forget the rest for a while and enjoy socialising with everyone. You'll remember why you started eventually and be back to it in no time

What's our advice for enjoying blogging again after falling out of love with it? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Loved this post so much. I've been at it for 3 years with a huge brand earlier this year and had to really remind myself this last week, why k started blogging in the first place. Sometimes, we've got to go back to basics when it wasn't just about numbers and shares. Lovely post! http://bymegankelly.co.za/
